Adium is started to develop by a college student Adam Iser in 2001, and now it has become the most popular multi-protocol free instant messaging client, which can connect to multiple IM clients (such as AIM, MSN, XMPP, Yahoo, and more) at the same time.

Adium provides an excellent user interface, with a high degree of integration and so powerful customizability, and is regarded as the iconic application on Mac OS. For example, Adium integrates the address book, has fancy event system, supports Growl notification, OTR encryption, file transfer, etc. Although its default UI is very simple, there are thousands of themes can be arbitrarily used to replace each element of the whole interface.
