M.U.G.E.N (AKA: Mugen, MUGEN, 無限) is a discontinued but still very active free 2D fighting game engine with many customizable components. It was developed by Elecbyte, first released in 1999 (for DOS). In 2009, MUGEN 1.0 was released, and in 2013, MUGEN 1.1 came out.

M.U.G.E.N is specially designed for users (especially fighting game enthusiasts) who have little, even no programming experience but want to make a real and cool 2D fighting game independently. This is where the biggest selling point of M.U.G.E.N lies. With help of M.U.G.E.N, you can make many characters from different ACGs (Animation, Comic, Game) and your homemade original roles fight at the same stage. In particular, so many 2D VS game fans around the world constantly create and publish their new roles, scenes, AI and other game resources for M.U.G.E.N platform.

Let me remind you of the last thing: M.U.G.E.N is just a non-professional engine that only used by some personal fighting game enthusiasts. The meaning of its existence is very simple and clear – providing a public combat platform for various characters from ACG. Otherwise, you have choose to use Unity and Unreal Engine such kind of professional game engines instead.
