Winamp was first released in 1997, and had taken the world since Version 2 (released in 1998). From Version 3 (released in 2002), Winamp started losing a lot of users. The subsequent V5 and V5.x are both powerless. We can see that, even now, Winamp still hasn’t given up the hope of rebirth! While the key to its fate is its frequent owners’ change hands (being acquired by AOL was a fatal mistake) and indecisive business pattern and profit model (free -> commercial -> free) – reduced to a pure trade good, which made iTunes perfect.

In the media player era ruled by Windows Media Player and RealPlayer, Winamp was born and quickly occupied the whole market depending on lots of its advantages (intuitive and compact user interface, support of playlists, customizable skins, music visualization, audio effect plug-ins, etc.). In a short time, it became the most popular MP3 player. In fact, it is exactly Winamp this once must-have audio player drove the MP3 audio into the mainstream format of music file. While now it has become a hard-to-find non-mainstream, and is more bloated in file size.

I guess only very few nostalgic users are still using Winamp to play MP3, CD-Audio, Line-In, WAV, VOC and some other classic audio formats. Anyway, in AppNee’s opinion, it is more endearing than foobar2000!
