Grome (short for Ground Moeling Environment) is a 3D simulation software for game environment that was especially designed for game developers, developed by Quad Software from Romania in 2007. However, its applications are not limited to entertainment industry. More than a terrain editor/level editor, it is also a complete scene constructor. In fact, it was also successfully used in some other cases, for example: virtual reality projects, real-time 3D simulation, the creation of scenes for offline rendering, and more.

Grome is an environmental modeling toolset dedicated for procedural and manual generation of large virtual outdoor worlds that are suitable for games and other 3D real-time simulation applications. It can integrate scene data into all kinds of well-known game engines (such as Unity, Unreal Engine, and Ogre3D) to use, and were used by some professional and famous game studios (such as Ubisoft, Eidos, Saab Avionics) or independent developers in their production pipelines for PC and video games development.

Grome has a friendly UI, supports keyboard shortcuts for every operation, provides real-time preview on multiple customizable hardware accelerated viewports, as well as presets system for tool parameters. Besides, it also comes with many fully-functional and self-contained tools such like terrain editor, object editor, road editor, water editor, decoration layers, Software Development Kit (SDK), and more.

// Key Features //

Feature Description
Scene Management
  • Large landscapes made of multiple zones with any size, in any direction and with different resolutions.
  • Snap tools used to create neighbor zones with automatic border stitching even for different resolutions.
  • Real-time rendering using industry standard OpenGL API.
  • Optimized scene management for massive working data. Special editing terrain LOD.
  • Multiple selection modes. Custom swap system that allows to selectively discard portions of scene from memory.
Layers Operations
  • Entire terrain data is organized per layers. Novel layered system that facilitates operations on multiple zones at once while still allows individual zone settings.
  • Multiple layers of heightmaps that can be used to separately operate on distinct terrain geometrical features.
  • Unlimited layers of textures with various shading settings to add realistic color details. Arbitrary oriented texture mapping that can be used to map textures vertically, horizontally or with any rotation on terrain slopes.
  • Multiple selection layers that can restrict terrain geometry operations only to desired areas.
Terrain Creation
  • Procedural creation of geometry using fractal algorithms and natural erosion. Control parameters like application zone, density and scaling.
  • Procedurally create textures based on terrain features like altitude, slope and orientation.
  • Create realistic shadows with shadowmap generation.
  • Procedurally or manually create selection layers based on terrain geometry.
  • Have local control using brushes with custom masks, orientation, sizes and strength.
Advanced Objects Management
  • Visually create single instances or use the object brush to spawn multiple objects at once. Control spawning area density, size, orientation, altitude and depth.
  • Use numeric inputs or visual gizmos to transform single or multiple instances.
  • Control linking properties between instances and terrain. Make instances follow terrain orientation, snap to terrain while transforming and react to terrain modifications.
  • Note: the movies frame rates don’t reflect the actual editor performance as they are affected by recording and encoding.

// Supported Game Engines //

Quad Software is committed to offer out-of-the-box integration Grome Editor for many known 3D engines.
