Shortny is a multifunctional website URL shortening service script developed based on PHP and MySQL. As its name suggests, its file size is quite small – less than 1 MB. The flies in the ointment are: Shortny’s source code does not separate the templates out, and does not yet support a multilingual user interface. Of course, developers with a little understanding of the web front-end technology can further customize and improve it according to their own needs with ease.

The user interface of Shortny is pretty clean, beautiful and decent, and it supports switching between day and night modes. Although the admin functions of Shortny are relatively simple, that is actually sufficient. For example, it supports custom suffixes, encrypted access, generating QR code, and viewing link access statistics. In addition, it also supports advertising, and I do believe this one feature is just what many webmasters need and like.

To sum up, if you need to shorten your URLs securely and seamlessly, then share it on social media or just scan the QR code via mobile phone, then Shortny is a very good choice. Compared with similar applications, its features are not inferior at all: simple & responsive design, more security checks, improved code quality, protected and custom links, API for development, etc.

This script has some flaws, for example:

  • The default installation folder should be named with “shortny“; page links at the bottom have not complete file name (about -> about.php, tos -> tos.php….), so you should correct it in the source code. Otherwise, you will see errors like: The requested URL /shortny/about was not found on this server.
