As Nintendo‘s first Mario game specially developed for iOS platform (rather than just a parkour edition of SMB, developed using the free Unity game engine), Super Mario Run also became the second annual topic of mobile game after Pokémon Go. In a sense, Super Mario Run is a bit similar to Square Enix‘s famous but abandoned “GO” series of mobile games. They both, in the premise of keeping the original game art style and basic settings, were specially optimized for mobile devices, and simplified the game operation, in order to attract more new junior players.

Super Mario Run fused various classic settings and elements of Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario 3D World and so on series of works (all notable designs you can see in these Mario games are retained), and provides a collection of playable characters that are familiar to players. Of course, in essence, it is still a parkour type of small game with simple rules that everyone can get started quickly – player only needs to avoid obstacles by clicking the jump button with one hand. In addition to the common parkour game mode, it also provides three additional game modes: World Tour (equivalent to the level patterns in former Mario works), Toad Rally (a multiplayer game), Kingdom Builder (a simple SIM type of game).

Apple and Nintendo mobilized a great deal of resources to promote Super Mario Run. For a mobile game, these means are really rare. In other words, Super Mario Run had been already half successful before it was officially released. In my opinion, the symbolic significance of the appearance of Super Mario Run is far more important than the practical significance of its existence.
