EarthView is a fairly cool dynamic desktop background/wallpaper + screensaver program that only takes earth as its theme, developed by DeskSoft from Austria. It gives us a direct bird’s-eye view of the earth from outer space on desktop, and shows the shift of day and night (i.e. the daylight zone and dark area at night) and the atmospheric cloud changes in a dynamic way, which can give users a stunning visual experience.

Microsoft WorldWide Telescope – Microsoft’s free and open-source space telescope project

Microsoft WorldWide Telescope (WWT for short) is a free and open-source virtual, visualized digital planetarium project (including application, data and cloud services) for both web browser (based on HTML5 and WebGL) and Windows desktop. It was originally created by Microsoft Research in 2002, and is now managed by the American Astronomical Society, and supported by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and National Science Foundation.

[Update] Universe Sandbox – Universe stars physical interaction simulator

Universe Sandbox is a very cool software designed to simulate the physical interaction movements (you can create & destroy on an unimaginable scale) of universe stars perfectly. It has a 3D engine with very high simulation degree, and is a pretty darned good simulator (also can be regarded as a scientific game) for understanding the whole universe.
