Only after experiencing numerous popular or well-known file hosting scripts (such as: ownCloud, Seafile, BeDrive, YetiShare, XFilesharing, uCloud, CloudShare, etc.), will you deeply sense this fact: compared with these bloated commercial or free online file managing & sharing system, this completely PHP-driven Veno File Manager (VFM for short) from Spain is obviously much simpler, more flexible, easier to use, and more practical.

The first version (v1.0.1) of Veno File Manager was released at the end of 2013. Its developer keeps active update for it all the time, and has it support all the relevant new features (such as PHP 7) for web servers. For example, Veno File Manager supports multi-user registration, supports generating file sharing links, supports Bootstrap self-adaption, allows to easily upload big files, allows to set up a custom access password for file link, supports online file preview, supports for multiple languages, supports Retina high-resolution display, perfectly supports HTTPS, etc.

In particular, Veno File Manager is quite lightweight (less than 2 MB), doesn’t need a database support at all, has no coding skills requirement for any levels of webmasters, and accomplished almost all the basic and important features for a file hosting system that the other existing file hosting scripts need more disk space and database support to implement. As to how to set it up, just upload Veno File Manager’s all files to your web hosting folder. Then you are able to access and use your own file hosting website immediately.

If you just need a simple online file manager to meet your daily needs for life or work (for example: send files to your customers, create new users with dedicated folders, or simply use it as your personal file cloud), then abandon any bulky and complex file hosting scripts such like ownCloud, because Veno File Manager is already enough. Of course, since it takes the route of minimalism, Veno File Manager does not provide functions extension or plug-ins support. As a result, its extensibility is not as powerful as ownCloud these large file sharing systems.

// Prompts //

  • Veno File Manager comes with pseudo static rules support, so you’d better choose Apache server environment. However, after actual running and testing, we found that the Nginx server environment also has no problem. So you don’t have to set up the pseudo static rules manually.
  • You need to make sure the access permission of the following files is 777, otherwise Veno File Manager won’t work properly:
    • /vfm-admin/config.php
    • /users/users.php
    • /uploads/
  • Usually setting CHMOD 755 to all vfm-admin/ folder (and its subdirectories) is sufficient. Any file that needs write access from VFM should be owned or group-owned by the user account used by VFM (which may be different than the server account). If VFM is running as the FTP account, that account needs to have write access, i.e., be the owner of the files, or belong to a group that has write access. In the latter case, that would mean permissions are set more permissively than default (for example, 775 rather than 755 for folders, and 664 instead of 644). Default CHMODs should be:
    • 755 on folders
    • 644 on files
  • If VFM still can’t write on files, try this:
    • 775 on folders
    • 664 on files
  • After version 3.6.1, its author began to take the way of “Insert your purchase code to view the upgrade instructions” to prevent piracy to a certain extent. This can be a big problem for old users who need to upgrade – because all of your generated links will be invalid after upgrading to new version according to the previous upgrade method. Of course, it is possible to slowly find the correct new way to upgrade by comparing the source code files of two versions. Unfortunately, at present, we only have the upgrade instructions of “UPGRADE to 3.6.1” in our hands. We hope that it can still bring some reference value to users who need to upgrade.
