The “play after downloading” and “direct play online” for streaming media have an immeasurably vast difference on experience. However, streaming media websites providing online music or video play service have been facing two development difficulties: copyright and server performance. For the former, if they chose to buy the original copyright, the investment will be huge, and comes with too few resources and very slow update; if it was pirated, then that’s always possible to be under surveillance and even shut down at any time. In the latter case, the more people visit, the worse the server performance will be, which means either they have to increase the hardware investment, or it’s difficult to get further development.

WebTorrent is a free, open-source and cross-platform streaming torrents client (written in JavaScript), developed for both web browser and desktop to download and online play torrent/magnet format of video/audio resources at the same time. Therefore, you don’t have to wait for them to finish downloading before playing them as usual. In particular, the situations like “You finally found that the downloaded video or music is not so good as you thought it should be, and immediately deleted it.” will not happen again.

As the first torrent client that can work in the browser, WebTorrent uses WebRTC for peer-to-peer data transmission whenever possible, and does not require browser plugins, extensions, or installation to work in your browser. And as a ultra-fast BT instant playback and download software, in WebTorrent, torrent and magent formats of media resources can get both accelerated downloading and smooth, real-time playback, alomost without waiting.

WebTorrent does not have the problems we mentioned at the beginning, and its appearance injects new vitality into the ancient but still active BT P2P downloading method. Therefore, companies such like Netflix will be able to benefit from WebTorrent a lot, and they can even use WebTorrent API to embed torrent format of audio and video in web pages, so as to provide their visitors with serverless online audio & video services. Plus, WebTorrent can also transfer the media stream to AirPlay, Chromecast and DLNA systems.

WebTorrent is pretty easy to use for desktop users. Just get a torrent file or a magnet link from any popular torrent search engine; then download the torrent file and drag & drop it onto WebTorrent, or paste (Ctrl + V) the magnet link in WebTorrent to play the video/audio; finally, you can immediately enjoy any media resources shared via torrent file or magnet link after buffering for a while (in the past, you have to wait until the downloading is completed before you can begin to watch or listen to them). In other words, with WebTorrent in hand, we don’t have to download any film and television resources from torrent search engine sites any more, unless for collection purpose.
