MusicBrainz Picard is a revolutionary music sorting software developed by MetaBrainz Foundation, it’s free, open-source and cross-platform. First use of it, maybe you feel its UI is so weird, but once get started, you will find that’s really reasonable and user-friendly.

Relying on the acoustic fingerprint identification technology, MusicBrainz Picard can help user automatically match the ID3 tag, whole album and download album art of a variety of formats of music files. The entire operation is very simple and smart: users only need to drag & drop music files/folders directly onto the software UI, then click ‘Scan’/’Lookup’ button. The principle of matching process is to compare the signature (PUID) of local music files with the information stored in the open-source Internet music album database MusicBrainz.

Fly in the ointment is, the database of MusicBrainz Picard has not been so large as Gracenote at present. But fortunately, its database can be optimized according to users’ own wills. That is to say, it has many enthusiastic users to help correct and improve the information in database. Therefore, it is ahead of Gracenote on the side of accuracy and correctness of music info.
