Pligg (now called Kliqqi) is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) developed by yankidank (Eric Heikkinen) in 2005, based on PHP and MySQL. It offers a set of features that are similar to popular social publishing websites like Digg or Reddit, where users can submit and vote on news articles and connect with other users.
Unlike sites built with other CMS programs that have a small editorial staff, Pligg aims to build a social CMS. That is the site can have countless authors, and all registered users can publish their own contents. In other words, Pligg is a user-driven CMS, which relies on each user, rather than website editors, to publish, vote on and manage news articles.
Pligg ever powered tens of thousands of websites, and specialized in creating social publishing networks. Although it has been discontinued, there are still a lot of number of webmasters that use the Pligg for the functionality it provides, allowing them to create their own social publishing and voting networks.
In short, as a social networking software, Pligg is not very versatile and somewhat outdated, but you can still use it to create your own social publishing platform and connect with other authors or contributors from around the world by submitting stories or voting and commenting on other articles.
// Key Features //
- Groups: Allow users to share articles with other members who share a common interest in a topic.
- Private Messaging: A social network site isn’t very social without the ability to communicate with each other.
- Advanced Comment System: Not only can you comment on articles, but you can rate comments posted by other users.
- User Profiles: Each user that signs up on a Pligg site gets their own profile page.
- Module System: Add additional functionality to your Pligg site without having to alter the Pligg code.
