Cisco Packet Tracer is a full-featured network simulation platform (mainly simulates Cisco routers and switches) with a graphical user interface, developed by Cisco Systems. It is designed to provide a network simulation environment for beginners in Cisco networking courses to design, configure and troubleshoot networks. In other words, it can provide a nearly perfect experimental environment for Cisco network engineers, administrators and Cisco certificate candidates.

Cisco Packet Tracer has integrated simulation, visualization, collaboration and evaluation and so on all network simulation environment elements, so it can be better applied to the comprehensive network technology teaching plan. Therefore, with it users can not only practice using routers, switches, wireless adapters and so forth to build their own networks, establish network topologies, but also help students and teachers to create simulation of all kinds of network phenomena. In addition, it allows user to establish the network topology directly via drag & drop operation, can provide detailed processing of packets traveling in the network, and allows user to observe the network running in real time.

Cisco Packet Tracer has a high degree of simulation, can help students and teachers establish simulation and virtual activity network models, which is conducive to teaching and learning complex technical concepts. It allows the creation of virtual networks with almost unlimited number of devices to supplement the lack of physical equipment in the classroom, motivates students to experiment with network behaviors and propose hypothesis analysis, and helps students practice, learn Cisco IOS configuration, and improve the ability to detect and troubleshoot network faults.

// Key Features //

  • Provides a realistic simulation and visualization learning environment that supplements classroom equipment, including the ability to see internal processes in real-time that are normally hidden on real devices
  • Enables multi-user, real-time collaboration and competition for dynamic learning
  • Enables authoring and localization of structured learning activities such as labs, demonstrations, quizzes, exams, and games
  • Empowers students to explore concepts, conduct experiments, and test their understanding of network building
  • Allows students and teachers to design, build, configure, and troubleshoot complex networks using virtual equipment
  • Supports a variety of teaching and learning opportunities such as lectures, group, and individual labs, homework, games, and competitions
  • Supports feature expansion through external applications using an API to enhance Cisco Packet Tracer’s functionality in areas such as curriculum and assessment delivery, games, accessibility, and interfacing with real equipment.
