The common (non-corporate) Internet user always uses a dynamic IP address from the ISP service provider, which causes an IP change (usually a new IP address) every time you log into your ISP account and connect to the Internet. In this environment, Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is the only solution if you want to use your computer as a Web server, BBS, mail server, or other Internet services without worrying about IP changes.
DirectUpdate is a small program that helps you automatically update your dynamic DNS account when your IP changes. It runs quietly in the background as a native service to make a check on the IP address assigned to your machine. It ensures both local and remote IP detection with a vast number of connections, including LAN, DSL or cable router, enables user to configure email notifications and FTP uploads, is fully customizable, and can be remotely managed from a web administration panel via any web browser.
DirectUpdate runs in the background (as a system service, even when no user is logged) after you install it; supports remote administration and built-in web administration from any browser; supports secure updates via SSL or MD5 encryption; supports many IP addresses simultaneously (Cable, xDSL, VPN, …), both IPv4 and IPv6; can work with many different DDNS services or providers at the same time; supports email notifications, FTP upload; fully customizable; supports IP detection via a hidden proxy of ISP, local IP detection with direct router query; and more.
BTW, DirectUpdate has some free alternatives, such as DDNS Updater, Marcs Updater, DynDNS Simply Client, GnuDIP Dynamic DNS, etc.
