ElcomSoft Distributed Password Recovery is a high-powered and distributed password brute-force cracking tool supporting hardware (GPU) acceleration, developed by ElcomSoft from Russia. It utilizes NVIDIA GPU and/or distributed computer to speed up the calculation so as to realize the speedup of password cracking/recovering. Therefore, it is mainly applied to rapid password recovery/crack, computer forensics, restoring the most complex passwords and strongly encrypted keys within limited time, and some other fields.

Distributed password recovery is to make as many computers as possible provide support for the same password cracking task through local machine, LAN, Internet, or hybrid network. In the field of wireless network password cracking, ElcomSoft Distributed Password Recovery not only is able to utilize NVIDIA graphics card to get the cracking speed of WPA/WPA2 wireless keys accelerated nearly a hundred times, but also allows thousands of computers to connect together for performing high-speed distributed parallel computing (by installing “Agents”, using distributed processes, building a distributed computing center). This means the WPA/WPA2 key’s cracking speed will decrease from previous years to weeks or even just a few days now.

Nevertheless, ElcomSoft Distributed Password Recovery does not support all file formats or applications (although new ones are being added continuously). As of this writing, this includes: Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project), WPA/WPA2 passwords, Windows logon passwords (LM and NTLM), BitLocker, PDF, and MD5 hashes. In addition, there are certain requirements for the GPU type of graphics card (to see the official version description for details).
