Gaea is a cutting-edge, next-generation 3D terrain and landscape design tool, developed by QuadSpinner in 2019. QuadSpinner, previously known for its plug-in GeoGlyph made for World Machine, now has its own, standalone terrain generation software. It combines powerful procedural control with a range of direct input methods, aiming to provide an artist-centered terrain generation scheme for game production.

Gaea can easily and quickly simulate a variety of natural terrains, landscapes and VFX, and generate other natural processes that make up a natural landscape. It comes with a rich and complete set of programmed terrain/landscape design tools, provides script interface to automatically execute common tasks, has elaborate terrain fine-tuning function, which can directly use the original data for combination and fine-tuning, so as to quickly realize the combination of terrains and instantly build a realistic three-dimensional world.

Designed with artists and their visions in mind, Gaea brings together an advanced toolset in one easy-to-use package. Its convenient workflow and careful design can maximize your work efficiency and save you time. All in all, with its help, you can get Hollywood-quality large-scale realistic terrains and scenes in minutes.

// Key Features //

Feature Description
Fast Prototyping Gaea’s wide array of geological primitive shapes, such as mountains, canyons, and craters, allow you to set up your core terrain in less than half the time it takes to squeeze a coherent shape out of basic fractals and noises. With LookDev nodes, these primitives can instantly become complete terrains.

The procedural nature of Gaea combined with its graph conveniences help you efficiently prototype, adapt, and revise. If you like making terrains, you will love riffing in Gaea.

Industry-Leading Erosion Erosion can make or break a digital terrain. We are proud to have the world’s most advanced erosion algorithm in Gaea, which was engineered specifically for hyperrealism and technical fidelity. It avoids all the common pitfalls of erosion in digital terrains and delivers consistent, resolution-independent results.

With the new Wizard node, you can produce complex erosion scenarios without any expertise. Or dive deep and finetune the tiniest aspects in the Erosion node.

Built-in Color Production Gaea’s color production is fully procedural and creates rich, 16-bit color maps. It can also generate PBR-friendly materials. Our color production uses data maps to automatically extract vital data and analyze various aspects of the terrain to add a variety of color details to it.

You can use hundreds of built-in satellite maps to colorize terrains or create your own. You can even synthesize colors from photos or scanned assets.

Simulating Nature Gaea is designed to simulate natural patterns like dunes, flows, growth areas, glaciers, snow, ice floes, and more. The tools for creating these shapes provide a balance between scientific accuracy and artistic freedom.

Even when you are making a surreal piece of art or alien worlds, these tools give you results that are otherworldly yet believable. By building a foundation on realistic physics, even unorthodox terrains can be made to look credible.

LookDev Nodes These specialized nodes allow you to create specific geological formations and even complex environments out of simple shapes with minimal effort.

Each node targets a particular type of “look”, reducing your need to build from scratch. The LookDev library includes environments such as large sandstone formations, shattered mountain slopes, folded terrains, and intricate canyon networks.

Rock Structures Natural terrains have rock formations and exposed rock structures. Unlike other terrain generators, Gaea provides special rock nodes that produce highly realistic results ranging from big rock formations to loose scree. They can also be used to make small and medium-scale cliff faces, rock walls, and more.

Rock nodes can impact erosion, like rocks affect erosion in real life. By sequencing multiple passes of erosion with rocky processes added in between, you can create richly layered sedimentary flows. In turn, this can dynamically affect data maps and color production.

Lakes, Rivers, and Sea The hydrology tools in Gaea let you achieve lakes, seas, coastal erosion, and rivers. Several water-friendly nodes, such as Cartography, Ice Floe, and DeadZone, have special water inputs that work in concert with these water nodes.

Water nodes provide additional data, such as water depth and shore masks, for procedural color production.

Beyond Terrains Gaea has proved to be a powerful procedural tool beyond terrains. You can craft richly detailed displacement maps that can be used in many 3D scenarios. You can create tiling textures that can be applied on simple meshes to make realistic rock formations, cliff walls, and rock faces. You can even fashion brush shapes for sculpting.

Procedural rock forms help you take complete control over the output and avoid the overly familiar look of scanned assets.

2.5D Render Engine Our render engine was designed for heightfields with sub-pixel precision. It powers our viewport for close examination in all lighting conditions. It can also bake lighting into your maps.

You get full access to render elements such as AO, Shadows, and more. You can even use it to melt snow and drive vegetation growth.

Infinite Variations The procedural nature of Gaea terrains, augmented with our mutation and variation tooling, give you literally infinite possibilities. You can make a graph once and get multiple variations during build.

You can even create a terrain archetype/recipe, simply change the input, and have the entire terrain reconfigure itself.

Adaptive Meshes Our intelligent mesh export can make a classic uniform displaced grid or take a polygon budget you specify and allocate polygon densities where needed. This can help you save up to 60% polygons, which can greatly benefit both realtime and offline render scenarios.

Integrated normal baking nodes help you relegate high frequency detail to maps.

Universal Export Gaea exports to 32-bit OpenEXR, TIFF, PNG, and OBJ giving you maximum compatibility. Export up to 8K in a single build, or up 128K using Tiled Export* in Gaea 1.3.1.

You can also use the bridge to Houdini® to harness the combined power of Gaea and Houdini!
