LineageOS (successor of CyanogenMod) is a very popular free and open-source operating system for various Android-based mobile devices (smartphones, tablet computers, and set-top boxes). It can make your idle, increasingly dull old Android-based phones or tablets shine again.
As an Android custom ROM forked from CyanogenMod and officially launched in 2016, LineageOS made its source code available on both GitHub and GitLab. And since its launch, LineageOS has been available for 100+ phone models with over millions of active installs around the world.
LineageOS is developed based on the Android mobile platform and the official releases of Android by Google. Every year there is a new Android version comes up and then a new LineageOS update also comes for almost all the latest and few older devices. But LineageOS is Google free. Every app that you see after the first booting is LineageOS’ own and written from scratch.
The advantage of LineageOS is that it is pretty similar to the native Android + ultra simplified, and only a few apps are pre-installed (most of them are free, open-source and essential), which are all similar to the native system, making users feel very comfortable. And there are no ads or cluttered features or services at all. So not only does the phone run very smoothly, but its battery life and service life are greatly extended.
LineageOS brings its own developments on top of Google’s Android, as well as the latest Android for those devices which have been abandoned by their OEMs in terms of new Android updates. The whole system is quite simple and pure. The UI design inherits Google’s Material Design design language, which is very simple and basically android’s native style. Even better, the system supports subsequent automatic upgrades.
LineageOS is the only Android custom ROM that is completely Google free, has no bloated software, no hidden apps or services running in background, and does not record user behaviors. Anyway, you can manually install Open GApps or microG to run Google apps as needed. Besides, it is also the only custom ROM that has a CTS (Compatibility Test Suite) like device supported requirements before a device is supported officially by the development team, which makes it secure.
