Microchip Studio (formerly called Atmel Studio) is a free integrated development environment (IDE)/integrated development platform (IDP) for creating and debugging the Atmel SMART ARM and Atmel AVR microcontroller (MCU), developed by Microchip Technology. It provides a modern and powerful environment along with debugging and on-chip programming tools for AVR and ARM development.

Microchip Studio is mainly used for the MCU design and development processes for ARM-based Atmel Smart MCU/MPU and AVR MCU. While providing users with low-power consumption, and wireless communication of embedded system design solutions, it greatly improves the performance for developing and debugging applications, helps a variety of users (including professional developers, students, electronics hobbyists and makers, etc.) conduct simplified guide for development, so as to get your app to market quickly.

Microchip Studio integrates with the Atmel Software Framework (ASF), which is a large free source code repository containing 1600+ ARM and AVR sample projects. ASF further enriches the functionality of IDP – giving developers access to the code that can be used directly in the same environment, and minimizing some of the primary design work required for the project.

In addition, by introducing Atmel Gallery and Atmel Spaces, Microchip Studio further simplifies the design of embedded MCU, thereby reducing the development time and cost. Atmel Gallery is an online application store that provides development tools and embedded software. Atmel Spaces is a cloud-based, collaborative development workspace that allows you to launch software and hardware projects for the Atmel MCU.
