The Moon and Sixpence is one of the most important full-length novels, written by William Somerset Maugham from United Kingdom and published in 1919. Based on the life of the French post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, the work shows the conflict between ideal and reality, spirit and matter, and has aroused the deep thinking of generations of readers.

The Moon and Sixpence uses first-person narration to tell the entire story. The protagonist of the story is a successful stockbroker in London, who becomes obsessed with painting after reaching middle age, then gives up everything to Paris to pursue the dream of painting, and finally chooses to stay away from the civilized world and escapes to the isolated South Pacific Tahiti. There he finally finds the tranquility of his soul and an atmosphere suitable for his artistic temperament, injects all the value of his life into the gorgeous canvas, and creates one after another artistic masterpieces that shocks future generations.

Through such a geek who wholeheartedly pursues art and has no understanding of human sophistication, Maugham explores thought-provoking issues such as the emergence and nature of art, the relationship between personality and genius, the contradiction between artists and marriage, family and society, and so on. At the same time, this book also arouses people’s thinking on the topic of getting rid of the shackles of the world and escaping from the secular society to find a spiritual home. And the description of the natural folk customs of the small islands in the South Pacific is also fascinating.

This book hits the soul directly and inspires readers to think about the relationship between reality and dreams. The anti-secular and anti-traditional stance interpreted in the book that “spirit is superior to material, and individual is greater than society” has made several generations of readers shed tears. The protagonist’s story takes place in every corner of the real world and plays out on everyone. We are all ordinary, how to achieve unity with self-discovery and self-expectation is a problem that everyone faces.
