Today, communication and network technologies have been highly developed, but the radio communication is still useful and even necessary in some environments and situations, such as remote areas and deep mountains and forests. When a fire broke out in a forest in northern Mexico in 2019, amateur radio operators were around the fire to provide communication support. They had been using Winlink and VARA HF in addition to the traditional VHF repeater.

VARA HF is a high performance sound-card modem based on OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) modulation, developed by José Alberto Nieto Ros (EA5HVK) from Spain. It brings state of the art military grade technology to new and existing HF data, and is commonly used to exchange traffic (mostly Winlink traffic) on the HF bands.

VARA is designed for operation within a SSB bandwidth of 2400 Hz using the most standard ham radio equipment with a sound-card interface. It provides uncompressed user data rates to 5629 bps at a low (S/N 14.5 dB @ 4kHz), 375 bps symbol rate with 52 carriers, and has 17 fast adaptive speed levels. It’s capable of 8489 bps in “Tactical” mode and 7050 bps in standard mode.

  2. Run keygen, input your “Callsign” (7 chars Max), and click ‘Generate Key‘
  3. Launch program, enter “Settings/VARA Setup…“, and input the generated license info
  4. Done
