Bejeweled (formerly called Diamond Mine, later Bejeweled Deluxe) is a series of tile-matching/gem-swapping/eliminating type of puzzle games created by PopCap Games (now a subsidiary corporation of Electronic Arts) for PC. It was initially developed using Java and released for web browsers in 2001, then followed by multiple sequels and spin-offs: Bejeweled 2 (2004), Bejeweled Twist (2008), Bejeweled Blitz (2009), Bejeweled 3 (2010), Bejeweled Stars (2016), and more.

As PopCap’s first and most successful game title, and one of the most successful casual games of all time, Bejeweled caused a sensation when it was born. So far, it has hundreds of millions of users around the world, landed on almost all platforms (PC, mobile, and game consoles), and became the No. 1 in similar games.

Bejeweled’s success is not only financially rewarding, but also recognized by the gaming industry. In 2002, it was selected as the Hall Of Fame by Computer Gaming World magazine, becoming the second game of its kind after Tetris. In the period that followed, imitators emerged, and all of them used it as a prototype. Since then, there has been a new type of game, Match 3, and many branches have been spawned.

As the originator of tile-matching games, Bejeweled seems to be a casual, mini game with simple rules and easy gameplay, but it fully embodies the simplicity and fun that match-solving games bring to players. It boasts extreme playability, offering players multiple basic game modes and hidden game modes to choose from. Bejeweled 2 is the second installment, which has made a lot of changes to the first: gorgeous graphics, high playability, and an excellent soundtrack have made it so critically acclaimed that it still endures today.

Bejeweled Twist has launched “A brilliant new way to play”. Compared to its predecessors, its graphics is more gorgeous, and the theme of space exploration has been strengthened. Although there aren’t many changes in the game mode and the game modes are relatively few, it does have gameplay features such as Score Multiplier, Replay, and a lot of freedom – player does not need to eliminate gems at every move, which allows players to put on their own formations.

The best feature of Bejeweled Blitz is that the operation becomes smooth, players don’t have to wait until the previous set of gems is eliminated. In addition, since Bejeweled Blitz is a time-limited way to hit the high score, a new way of playing has been introduced on the basis of inheriting several previous games. Another highlight of this game is the badge system and item system, both of which can help players achieve better results.

Bejeweled 3 is a remastered version and continuation of Bejeweled 2, creatively developing 4 new hidden modes based on the 4 basic modes, thus greatly improving the playability. In addition, its graphics and sound quality have been improved across the board, and new medal system and level system have been introduced. Although the gameplay is traditional, it is still extremely flexible, which is why it is widely acclaimed.
