Missile Dancer (AKA: MissileDancer) is a small and independent vertical-scrolling shooting game for PC, mobile and game consoles, developed by TERARIN GAMES (Terarin55) from Japan in 2018. It comes with retro style, minimalistic design and simple gameplay.

In typical vertical shmup fashion, the playfield in MissileDancer is narrow. Players control a jet equipped with lock-on missiles and autofire to fend off incoming enemy missiles. A radar is available to monitor approaching enemies. By holding down the lock-on button, players can lock on to multiple targets, which will then launch automatically. Alternatively, players can manually launch locked-on missiles by releasing the lock-on button or pressing the missile button.

Throughout the game, players can collect Range and Missile items. Range items extend the lock-on range, while Missile items increase the number of deployable missiles. Defeating larger enemies rewards players with crystals that yield bonus points upon completing the area. Players can increase their chain by destroying enemies in quick succession. However, the chain resets when the chain meter expires. The higher the chain, the more points players earn for eliminating enemies.

There are two game modes available for you to choose from: Arcade and Caravan. The Arcade mode is the main story mode, consisting of 8 different areas. Within this mode, you have the option to play on three different difficulties: Easy, Normal, and Hard. On the other hand, the Caravan mode is a score attack mode that lasts for 3 minutes. In this mode, there are occasional blocks that you can hit in between waves of enemies to help maintain your chain.

The story mode is well-designed and can be completed in approximately 15 minutes. The inclusion of lock-on missiles adds a unique twist to the gameplay. Each area in the game offers a distinct experience, including the bosses. As a whole, it’s enjoyable and relaxing to play. Even beginners can clear the game on Easy difficulty once they grasp the mechanics of the lock-on system and how to take down enemy missiles. If you’re looking for a challenge, Hard difficulty will provide you with a decent level of difficulty.
