MKVToolNix (AKA: Matroska Toolkit) is a free, open-source and cross-platform collection of tools primarily used to perform merging, splitting, encapsulating, extracting operations to MKV format of videos, audio tracks, and subtitles.
MKVToolNix is a powerful GUI toolset with currently the most complete functions for processing MKV (Matroska) format of media. It makes the production and editing of MKV container format of media files simpler and more intuitive. It can encapsulate a variety of codecs of video/audio and subtitles in different languages into a single MKV file without any quality loss. Besides, it also perfectly supports extracting the audio/video/subtitle file from an MKV file, and inspecting, splitting, merging MKV files. For this, it is much more useful than all the other tools that support MKV cutting/splitting feature, including Boilsoft Video Splitter, SolveigMM AVI Trimmer, etc.
As a universal multimedia container file format, MKV’s main goal is to replace most of the old media packaging formats. The major object is Microsoft’s AVI (Audio Video Interleaved), which has been active for more than 20 years since birth. That’s because the disadvantage of AVI is obvious and critical – it’s very difficult for it to support new audio/video codecs. While the open framework, cross-platform use, and many advanced features of Matroska are incomparable for AVI.
