Skul: The Hero Slayer is a rogue-lite (procedurally generated rooms) and pixel style of 2D platformer action RPG game, developed by SouthPAW Games from South Korea, using Unity along with 2D Tilemaps, 2D Pixel Perfect and Sprite Atlas.

Skul can gain new abilities by wearing skulls of other species, each with a different weapon and skill combination, so players can enjoy fast-paced combat with different characters. There’s some ingenuity in the world view (very typical anti-hero theme), operational feedback, transformation system, etc., mature role design is impressive, and experienced numerical settings bring the right level of difficulty. In particular, the “head change” transformation design sets the changes of weapon system, skill system and operating characteristics in one place, which is at the heart of the game’s appeal.

Skul: The Hero Slayer is a collection of many popular rogue-lite games at present. The player is constantly experimenting with different skill combinations to find the best way to grow and keep getting better. Every time you die, you face new unknowns (because all rooms are procedurally generated), and that’s the nerve-racking and exciting part. So, there is no concept of branching roads, no going backwards, only a single exit in each room for moving ahead.

// Prompts //

  • This game may start up very slowly.
  • After actually playing the game, I can only give it 2/10 score! Because, it has no playability at all (dull character skill, only a few types of enemies, crappy system design…). So, is has been added to the blacklist.
