Super Mario Bros. 1/3 is a hacked rom that is based on the classic video game Super Mario Bros. 1 and added with features from Super Mario Bros. 3, developed by Corpse Grinder and Doomday from Russia, in 2018. Its main feature is that it enables you to play with another player at the same time.

The name of Super Mario Bros. 1/3 does confuse me at first. But after trying it out, I found it was implemented based on the scenes of Super Mario Bros. 1 and a large number of elements of Super Mario Bros. 3, including players, maps and props. In addition, it also introduces new power-ups, significant graphic updates, and a world map, along with other features.

Super Mario Bros. 1/3 utilizes a modified version of FCEUX emulator, featuring extended PPU RAM to support additional sprites and a custom palette file. Despite the noticeable clash in art styles throughout the hack, you will find Super Mario Bros. 1/3 to be very impressive and enjoyable. It’s highly recommended to try it out at least once.

BTW, this game file hacks game rom and emulator at the same time. That’s, it is not the traditional .nes format, but the .nesm format, which needs to be run using the FCEUX or Mednaffen emulator. Moreover, different versions of roms require different versions of emulators.

// Key Features //

// Official Demo Videos //

// Tips //

  • Secret Menu Code: Left Left B Right Right A

// Prompts //

  • Any player’s death will cause a game over.
  • The ROM file needs to be extracted before it can be emulated.
  • The latest version of FCEUX does not support this rom.
  • The palette that comes with the emulators is required for use:
    • (for Mednaffen, it will be enough to have a file with a palette called “nes.pal” in the palettes folder)
    • (for FCEUX, you need to go to Config/Palette/Load Palette and point to the file with the palette)
