Microsoft WorldWide Telescope (WWT for short) is a free and open-source virtual, visualized digital planetarium project (including application, data and cloud services) for both web browser (based on HTML5 and WebGL) and Windows desktop. It was originally created by Microsoft Research in 2002, and is now managed by the American Astronomical Society, and supported by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and National Science Foundation.

Stellarium – Explore the outer space on your desktop

Stellarium is a free open-source desktop virtual planetarium software from France, supports Unix/Linux, Windows and Mac OS X platforms. It uses OpenGL to render the stars in real time, and generate a virtual 3D sky on your desktop, so the stars effect is almost completely the same as you observe the stars sky with only naked eye, telescope or astronomical telescope.
