In fact, photogrammetry, a technology that uses photos to generate 3D models, is an old technology with a history of nearly 200 years. It mainly relies on multiple photos and videos taken by the camera to calculate the shape, size and spatial position of the target object. Nowadays, with the help of the huge computing power of computers, many software programs can directly read the object data in the photo and generate a 3D model.

The most commonly used software on computers for generating 3D models using photogrammetry is RealityCapture. Just upload photos of an object taken from various angles to RealityCapture, and it can turn the object in the photo into a 3D model. RealityScan was developed by the developer of RealityCapture using Epic GamesUnreal Engine. It essentially transfers the core functions of RealityCapture on the PC platform to mobile phones.

RealityScan is a free and industry-leading 3D scanning & modeling application for iOS devices and ARCore-enabled Android devices, developed by Epic Games in partnership with Capturing Reality (the developer of RealityCapture) and Quixel (the developer of Megascans) and released in 2022. It enables you to efficiently create high-definition, digital, textured 3D models for real-world objects using just your phone or tablet, and then use them anywhere.

RealityScan is here to make it possible for anyone to import ultra-high precision digital models of real-world objects into their virtual projects. Its biggest advantage over RealityCapture is that the whole process becomes much simpler. You just pull out your phone and take a picture with the camera and you can quickly and easily do a complete modeling, with textures. Compared with similar applications, it’s much faster and more accurate.

RealityScan can quickly capture the details and textures of object surfaces, and effectively process, edit and optimize scanned data to generate high-precision and high-quality 3D models. It supports the export of multiple file formats and is compatible with popular 3D software and 3D scanners. Even if you don’t have any 3D scanning experience, you can use RealityScan to create high-quality 3D models. Its AR guidance tool will lead you through the entire scanning process.

RealityScan also offers a live scan preview feature, where users can instantly see how the model will look during the scan process to ensure the required detail and completeness. If the user is not satisfied with the scan at a certain angle, they can simply reposition the phone and rescan that section for more accurate results. After the scan is completed, RealityScan can use the cloud service Sketchfab to quickly create a realistic digital model.

In the past, providing real-world assets for digital experiences was a complex process that was technology-intensive and labor-intensive, requiring a lot of technical and human support. However, Epic Games hopes that smartphone-based RealityScan can greatly lower the relevant threshold, allowing ordinary people to complete 3D modeling of physical objects using the camera function of their mobile phones, thereby helping the creator community broaden access to complex photogrammetry functions and realize the future of virtual content creation: real-world 3D scanning powered by AR.

// Main Applications //

  • Create realistic assets for your game, project, VFX, or AR/VR experience.
  • Create assets for 3D visualization, 3D prints, and prototypes.
  • Capture and preserve your memories by 3D scanning special objects or places that have meaning to you.

// Key Features //

Feature Description
Scan with your phone or tablet Turn almost any object into a highly detailed 3D model simply by taking photos of it.

The application’s intuitive user interface makes it easy to quickly scan objects, wherever you are.

AR guidance You don’t need any previous scanning experience to create a high quality 3D model. The app’s AR guidance tool will take you through the process, highlighting any area of the object that requires extra photos.

You can easily check the coverage from the different camera positions when you’re done. View and remove all unconnected/unaligned images.

Cropping box Time to remove the noise around your object. Just select the cropping box tool and scale to the size of the object you want to replicate in CG.

You can review the cropped image using the preview mode and make further adjustments as needed.

Review mode Quality check your model to make sure you’re getting the best results.

In Review mode, view the model as it would look if you exported right now or by photo coverage quality — the areas of the model in green have sufficient photo coverage, those in red or orange need additional photos.

Export to Sketchfab Share your creation with the world! When you’re happy with the result, you can export your model directly to Sketchfab.

Download your model from there to use it in Unreal Engine, Twinmotion, Mesh to MetaHuman, or post-processing tools.

Project Library View all your scanned models in the Project Library.

Give your models a name and a description, fix unconnected images, and preview your final version as a directly embedded Sketchfab model.

// Official Demo Videos //

// System Requirements //

  • iPhones/iPads running iOS 16+
  • Android phones/tablets running Android 7+, and supporting ARCore

// Prompts //

  • The application and all exports are completely free of charge. The limit on the number of models you can upload to your Sketchfab account per month depends on your Sketchfab plan, but when you first upload to Sketchfab, you’ll automatically be upgraded to a Sketchfab Pro account for a whole year.
  • Exporting models to Sketchfab is free, but there is a limit to the number of models users can upload to their Sketchfab account each month.
